How the Hiring Process Typically Works

Amazon's warehouse hiring is high-volume and often fast-tracked. Many sites run same-day or next-day offer events. Here's the typical flow:

1

Confirm this is the right Amazon role for you

Warehouse and fulfillment positions are physical, on-site roles. If you're looking for a remote or driving-based position, explore the other Amazon categories below:

2

Apply at Amazon's official careers page

Go to amazon.jobs, search for "Fulfillment Associate" or "Warehouse Associate," and filter by your location. Amazon posts new openings daily — applying as soon as a role appears significantly improves your chances of a same-week offer.

3

Complete the online application and assessment

The application is short — work history, availability, and a brief online assessment. Amazon looks for candidates with reliable availability and a willingness to follow safety procedures. No technical knowledge required.

Attend orientation and start your first shift

Most warehouse hires begin with a paid orientation session covering safety rules, facility layout, and job responsibilities. Your first weeks include on-the-job training alongside experienced associates before working independently.

Types of Warehouse & Fulfillment Roles at Amazon

Fulfillment center work covers several specialized functions. Most new associates start in one area and can cross-train over time:

Stow
Receive incoming inventory and place items into designated storage locations in the fulfillment center. Fast-paced and physical — involves walking 8–12 miles per shift.
Pick
Retrieve items from storage to fulfill customer orders. Uses a handheld scanner — no memorization required. One of the most common entry-level functions.
Pack
Package picked items securely for shipment. Involves operating packing machines and applying labels. Requires attention to detail and speed accuracy.
Sort / Ship
Sort outbound packages by carrier or delivery zone and prepare them for loading. Physical and time-sensitive — often tied to shift-end deadlines.

Physical Requirements

Fulfillment center work is physically demanding. Before applying, confirm you can meet these typical requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move continuously for the full shift (10–12 hours including breaks for 10-hour models, or 8-hour shifts depending on site).
  • Ability to lift and carry packages up to 49 lbs (22 kg) repeatedly throughout the shift. Team-lift procedures apply for heavier items.
  • Comfortable using handheld scanners and digital displays — basic comfort with touchscreen devices is sufficient.
  • Ability to work in a warehouse environment: varying temperatures, noise from machinery, and fast-paced floor activity.
  • Reliable punctuality — attendance is tracked closely. Amazon uses an internal point system; excess absences can affect employment status.
Amazon provides all required PPE (personal protective equipment) including safety vests, steel-toe shoe vouchers (in most markets), and ergonomic aids. Associates are not expected to bring their own equipment.

Pay, Schedule & Shift Options

Base pay
$17–$22/hour depending on location and role. Pay is reviewed annually and typically exceeds the local minimum wage by a meaningful margin.
Overtime
Significant overtime is available, especially during Q4 (October–December) and Prime Day periods. Overtime is paid at 1.5x the base rate.
Shift models
Most sites offer: Day shift (6am–4:30pm), Night shift (6pm–4:30am), and Weekend Day / Weekend Night. Some sites use a 4-day, 10-hour model (3 days off).
Benefits
Full-time associates receive health insurance, dental, vision, paid time off, 401(k), Career Choice tuition assistance, and employee discounts — all from day one of employment.

Practical Tips Before You Apply

  • Choose your shift carefully: Night and weekend shifts often have faster hiring and slightly higher pay differentials. If your schedule allows, selecting a less popular shift can speed up your offer significantly.
  • Apply to multiple nearby sites: Amazon often has several fulfillment centers within commuting distance of major cities. Applying to multiple sites at once maximizes your chances of a fast offer.
  • Prepare your ID documents in advance: You'll need a government-issued photo ID and, in most markets, proof of legal right to work. Have these ready before your orientation date.
  • Dress appropriately for orientation: Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing for the first day — you'll be on the floor and may complete safety walks as part of orientation.
  • Understand the attendance policy: Amazon uses a points-based attendance system. Arriving late or leaving early counts as partial points. Understand the policy before your first shift to protect your standing.
